How Man City and Man Utd's final-day fixtures will decide the remaining Champions League places

Aston Villa's Europa League final victory on Wednesday night has secured their place in next season's Champions League, but their result against Manchester City on Sunday will have a major impact on the remaining European places in the Premier League.

England have been given an extra Champions League spot for next season thanks to the strong performances of Premier League clubs in UEFA competitions. This is called an Elite Performance Spot (EPS), but it is only applied after all other forms of qualification, meaning Villa would need to finish fifth for the extra place to go to the team finishing sixth.

What happens if Villa finish fourth?

Villa currently sit fourth and are three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool. If they avoid defeat at City on Sunday, they will secure fourth place. In that scenario, the final Champions League spot goes to the team finishing fifth, which will be either Liverpool or Bournemouth.

The European places would be: Arsenal, Man City, Man Utd, Aston Villa and the fifth-placed club in the Champions League, with sixth and seventh in the Europa League and eighth in the Conference League.

What happens if Villa drop to fifth?

If City beat Villa and Liverpool win at home to Brentford, Villa would drop to fifth. In that case, the EPS kicks in and six Premier League teams would qualify for the Champions League. That means the sixth-placed finisher, which could be Bournemouth or Brighton, would also make it into Europe's top competition.

However, one Europa League spot would be lost, with only seventh place qualifying for that competition and eighth going into the Conference League.

Where does Man Utd's game come in?

Brighton are three points behind sixth-placed Bournemouth but have a better goal difference. If they beat Manchester United at the Amex on Sunday and Bournemouth lose to Nottingham Forest, Fabian Hurzeler's side would finish sixth and potentially claim a Champions League place.

What about further down the table?

Crystal Palace, currently 15th, would qualify for next season's Europa League as Conference League winners if they beat Rayo Vallecano in the final on May 27.
