Van der Sar says replacing Casemiro will be a 'headache' for Carrick as Maguire offered to Inter Milan

Michael Carrick faces what Edwin van der Sar has described as a "headache" in replacing Casemiro this summer, while Harry Maguire's future at Manchester United has been thrown into fresh uncertainty despite his recent contract extension.

What did Van der Sar say about Casemiro?

Former United goalkeeper Van der Sar said the 34-year-old's departure will leave a significant gap in midfield and described the task of replacing him as a "headache" for Carrick.

"The big thing is Casemiro leaving, which will leave them a big gap in midfield," Van der Sar said. "I think the last year and a half, the appreciation for him and his career has been immense, so that will be a headache."

He added: "Goal-scoring wise, with the addition of Mbeumo, Cunha and Sesko, they have a little more grit, a little bit more stability, a little bit older players. I think they will do that again this summer, they will look at the Premier League to see which players are available to fill the gaps to make sure the level of Man United goes up every year."

United are poised to make Atalanta midfielder Ederson their first signing in a £38 million deal, with further midfield arrivals expected.

What is happening with Harry Maguire?

It was less than two months ago that Maguire signed a one-year contract extension, featuring an option for United to extend it by a further year. The deal was awarded to the 33-year-old after stunning form under Carrick, featuring in all but two of his 17 games in charge.

But with the ink barely dry, Maguire's future is seemingly up in the air again. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan have been offered the chance to sign the England defender. The report claims a departure from Old Trafford is possible, but Maguire is not currently a priority for the Serie A champions.

Maguire will have an extended summer break after being left out of Thomas Tuchel's World Cup squad.
