Free museums
Science and Industry Museum
Manchester's standout museum for kids. It tells the story of Manchester's role in the industrial revolution through working machines, interactive exhibits, and one of the best science centres for children in the country. Free entry; some special exhibitions are ticketed. Liverpool Road, Castlefield.
Manchester Museum
Part of the University of Manchester. Egyptology collection (including real mummies), dinosaur skeletons, a vivarium with live animals, and dedicated family trails. Completely free. Just off Oxford Road.
Imperial War Museum North
Architecturally striking museum at Salford Quays. Free entry. The Big Picture Show (a multi-screen audio-visual experience) is a favourite with slightly older children.
People's History Museum
Free museum on the Spinningfields side of the city, telling the story of democracy and protest in Britain. Excellent family trails and a good café.
Parks and green spaces
Heaton Park
The biggest park in Europe (depending on how you measure). A real day-out park with the Heaton Park Tramway (a working vintage tram line), a boating lake, a working farm, playgrounds, and enormous open space. Free entry. Some activities inside the park are paid, but the vast majority is free.
Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens (Didsbury)
One of Manchester's most beautiful parks. Rose gardens, alpine garden, woodland walks, and an adventure playground. Free. Walkable from any of the four Didsbury tram stops.
Whitworth Park
Connected to the Whitworth gallery. Redesigned in recent years around how children actually use parks. Free, with a nearby café and plenty of green space.
Platt Fields Park (Fallowfield)
Large park with a lake, playground, skate park, and adventure play area. Free.
Alexandra Park (Whalley Range)
Beautiful park with boating lake, bandstand, and regular community events. Free.
Free family events
Aviva Studios (Factory International)
