If you're moving to Manchester with school-age children, the question of schools is likely the single most important factor in deciding where to live. Schools in Greater Manchester vary enormously in quality, and the geography of those differences shapes where families end up.

How school admissions work in Greater Manchester

Greater Manchester is divided across 10 local authorities, each with their own school admissions process. Manchester City Council (Didsbury, Chorlton, central) uses the comprehensive system. Trafford (Altrincham, Sale, Hale) is one of the few authorities still using grammar schools. Salford and Stockport are comprehensive-only.

For grammar schools, your child takes the 11+ exam in Year 6. For comprehensive schools, allocation is based primarily on distance from home and any sibling priority.

Best primary schools

Beaver Road Primary (Didsbury)

Outstanding (Ofsted). One of the most-discussed primary schools in South Manchester. Very small catchment area, intense competition for places, and a corresponding house price premium for being in catchment.

Didsbury Church of England Primary

Outstanding. Equally competitive, equally well-regarded.

Bowdon Church School (Altrincham)

Outstanding. Extremely competitive primary school for the Bowdon and Altrincham area.

Best secondary schools — comprehensive

Parrs Wood High School (Didsbury)

Good. One of the largest secondary schools in the country and consistently one of the best-performing comprehensives in Manchester.

Chorlton High School

Good. Large comprehensive that draws from across South Manchester.

Trinity CofE High School (Hulme)

Outstanding. One of Manchester's most-respected church secondaries.

Best grammar schools (Trafford)

These are some of the best state schools in the country. All require children to pass the 11+ exam.

  • Altrincham Grammar School for Girls (Outstanding) — consistently one of the top state schools in the country

  • Altrincham Grammar School for Boys (Outstanding) — equally celebrated

  • Loreto Grammar School, Altrincham (Outstanding) — Catholic girls' grammar

  • Sale Grammar School (Outstanding) — mixed-sex grammar

  • Stretford Grammar School (Outstanding)

  • Urmston Grammar Academy (Outstanding)

Best independent schools

Manchester Grammar School (Fallowfield): one of the best independent schools in the country, boys 7–18. Withington Girls' School: consistently outstanding academic results. Cheadle Hulme School: mixed-sex, 4–18.

Choosing the right school

  • Visit the schools. Open days reveal more than Ofsted reports.

  • Read multiple Ofsted reports, not just the headline.

  • Catchment areas change. Don't assume the catchment will be the same in 5 years.

  • Sibling priority matters a lot.

  • The 11+ is competitive in Trafford. Plan for tutoring if needed.

  • Sixth forms matter. Some schools have brilliant 11–16 provision but weaker sixth forms.
