Manchester Airport passengers' data exposed in cyber attack on parking, lounge and Wi-Fi bookings

Passengers who booked car parking, lounge access, Fast Track passes or signed up for Wi-Fi at Manchester Airport have had their personal details accessed in a cyber incident.

Manchester Airports Group, which also runs London Stansted and East Midlands, confirmed that customer data was obtained by an unauthorised third party. The company said it had "immediately contained the risk" and was working with specialist advisers and the relevant authorities.

What data was taken?

The information accessed includes email addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registration numbers and postcodes. MAG said neither it nor the affected system held customers' bank or payment details.

Are flights affected?

No. Passenger safety and aviation security have not been compromised and airport operations remain unaffected. Passengers should continue travelling as normal.

However, the online Manage My Booking service has been temporarily suspended as a precaution. Customers needing to amend bookings due within 72 hours should contact MAG's customer services team, which is open on weekdays between 9am and 5pm. Wait times may be longer than expected.

All existing bookings remain valid.

What should customers do?

MAG has contacted affected customers directly and advised them to remain alert for suspicious emails, text messages and phone calls. Customers should avoid clicking links or opening unexpected attachments.

Cybersecurity expert Raghu Nandakumara from Illumio warned: "This is a significant breach affecting a large number of customers ahead of one of the busiest travel periods of the year for UK airports. The exposed data increases the risk of targeted phishing and smishing attempts, where attackers can use legitimate travel-related information to make malicious communications appear convincing."
