Suspected human remains found near M67 bridge as road workers make grim discovery

Road workers called police at around 11pm on Monday after finding suspected remains close to a bridge between junctions three and four. Detectives and CSI officers are at the scene and the eastbound carriageway is closed.

Part of the M67 is closed after suspected human remains were discovered close to the Tameside motorway.

Greater Manchester Police said road workers called officers at around 11pm on Monday (August 3) after making the discovery near a bridge between junctions three at Hyde and four at Hattersley.

A GMP spokesperson said: "Officers were called shortly after 11pm on Monday, August 3, by road workers who made the discovery close to a bridge between junctions three and four. We are working with specialist teams to understand the circumstances behind this incident."

They added: "The road will be closed between junctions three and four while detectives carry out their investigation. Please continue to avoid the area and we will provide updates when we have them."

Detectives said they believe they have identified the suspected remains. CSI officers have been spotted at the scene on Tuesday afternoon.

The M67 eastbound is closed between junctions three and four and is expected to remain shut throughout the day. National Highways said there is no estimated time for reopening. The westbound carriageway reopened at 9am.

What about the A628?

In a separate incident, drivers are facing another major closure nearby. A BMW driver in his 20s has sadly died following a crash with a Mercedes-Benz on the A628 in Tintwistle late on Monday night.

His three passengers and the Mercedes driver were rushed to hospital with serious injuries. The road remains closed between Mottram Moor and Old Road in Tintwistle, though the wider Woodhead Pass has reopened.
