Glossop homes evacuated and roads cordoned off after suspected WW2 bomb dug up in garden

Homes and businesses in Glossop were evacuated on Sunday (July 5) after a resident dug up what is believed to be World War Two ordnance while gardening.

Derbyshire Police confirmed a cordon was in place in Glossop town centre after the unexploded device was found in the garden of a property on Chapel Street. Multiple police vehicles were seen along High Street West as homes and nearby businesses were temporarily evacuated.

How was it found?

Louis Ashurst, who discovered the item, told the MEN: "Myself and my partner Tom were doing some gardening and spotted the object. It was just under the surface."

He said he ran a photo of the item through the AI tool Grok, "and it told me to report it due to its shape."

He added: "A first responder came within ten minutes to look at the object. He escalated it and was ordered to provide a 100-metre perimeter. We are now awaiting MOD to inspect it."

What did police say?

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: "A cordon is in place in Glossop town centre following an unexploded piece of what is believed to be WW2 ordnance found in the garden of a property in Chapel Street today."

They added: "A number of homes have been evacuated in the area as a precaution while we await the arrival of the Army's bomb disposal team at the scene. Anyone who has not been spoken to directly by officers does not require evacuation at this time."

Pictures shared on social media showed police vehicles blocking the main high street, popular with bars and restaurants. One person wrote: "On Chapel Street our street have been evacuated and surrounding area. It's in someone's garden!"
