Surgeon struck off after Royal Oldham operation so badly botched it was 'not known to man'

A locum surgeon who botched a bowel operation at Royal Oldham Hospital so badly an expert said the procedure was "not known to man" has been struck off the medical register.
Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman carried out the emergency surgery on a young man on August 25, 2020. The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service, sitting in Manchester, heard he wrongly connected the patient's organs, creating a "closed loop" that meant the contents of the bowel, leaving his stomach, were re-deposited back into his stomach.
The patient was left in "uncontrollable pain" and could have died but for another surgeon correcting the error in a second operation.
A former consultant general and colorectal surgeon, acting as the GMC's expert witness, said the procedure was "not known to man" and the error was "as bad as it gets."
Did Rahman accept what happened?
At no time did Rahman consider that something may have gone wrong surgically, the tribunal heard, despite the patient's parents and other medics expressing concerns.
He did not attend the Manchester hearing and was not legally represented. He claimed he had been made a "scapegoat" after a "witch hunt."
Did he break the rules again?
The MPTS imposed restrictions on his work in July 2021. But Rahman breached the conditions by applying for and securing a locum job at Affidea Express Care Clinic in Ireland in February 2022.
The tribunal ruled this breach was an "aggravating" feature on top of already "significant" errors in surgery and post-operative care.
The tribunal concluded that his misconduct was "fundamentally incompatible with continued registration" and erased him from the medical register.
