Manchester residents react to Andy Burnham's new 'No 10 North' office

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has officially opened 'No 10 North', a new governmental outpost located in an office block near Albert Square. According to a report by The Independent, the former Greater Manchester Mayor chaired his inaugural meeting at the site on 24 July and intends to work from the city on a weekly basis.

The political development has already made an impact on local businesses. The Millstone pub recently installed a replica Downing Street door, a move that 83-year-old landlord Gerard Ford told The Independent has significantly boosted trade and attracted widespread attention from the public.

The official No 10 North site remains relatively discreet, situated next to a commercial bar and identifiable primarily by police presence and security fencing. Despite its unassuming exterior, the location has begun drawing curious onlookers and visitors from across the region who are eager to see the new centre of political power.

Residents have expressed cautious optimism about the decentralisation of government. Wythenshawe resident Kash Haroon highlighted the stark contrast between transport infrastructure in the capital and the North, suggesting to The Independent that having officials commute to Manchester might finally prompt improvements to the regional rail network.

The new office also aims to address the migration of young professionals to the south. Burnham has stated his intention to prevent graduates from feeling forced to leave the region for career opportunities, a sentiment echoed by local students who feel London currently monopolises economic growth and investment.

While the symbolic value of a northern headquarters is widely acknowledged, some residents remain sceptical about its practical impact. Rochdale local Ben Lee noted that while the initiative is a positive gesture, the true test will be whether the administration can deliver tangible changes to regional funding and infrastructure.
