Manchester United have confirmed a proposed location for their new 100,000-seater stadium as part of an ambitious masterplan for the regeneration of Trafford Wharfside.

The club said the new ground would sit at the heart of a "Stadium District," about 350 metres north-west of the existing Old Trafford stadium. The announcement came as Trafford Council published its vision for a "sports-led" regeneration of the wider area.

What does the masterplan include?

The new stadium has been billed as the "flagship landmark" of the Wharfside development, which the council said would be "a network of attractive neighbourhoods in which to live, work, wander and explore."

The vision covers 150 hectares and speaks to a "diverse neighbourhood" creating 48,000 local jobs and 15,000 new homes. United said the mixed-use development has the potential to offer a £7.3 billion per annum boost to the UK economy.

The masterplan also includes new and improved public transport links, enhanced rail connectivity and extensive walking and cycling infrastructure.

What about Old Trafford?

United said no decision has been made regarding the future of the existing Old Trafford stadium.

What happens next?

Trafford Council leader Tom Ross said: "We want to create a great place to be, not just on matchdays but every day."

A public consultation on the masterplan is now due to open.
