Public Consultation Launches for Massive Old Trafford Regeneration Masterplan — Trafford council

Trafford Council is asking residents for their views on the Wharfside regeneration masterplan, which includes 15,000 new homes and the proposed 100,000-seat Manchester United stadium.

The consultation runs from Tuesday July 28 until Tuesday September 22. Three information sessions will be held: Trafford Town Hall, Talbot Road, Stretford on Wednesday July 29 (4pm to 7pm), Gorse Hill Studios, Cavendish Road, Stretford on Wednesday September 9 (4pm to 7pm), and Stretford Metros Sports and Social Club, Moss Road, Stretford on Tuesday September 15 (4pm to 7pm).

Deputy council leader and executive member for economy and regeneration Liz Patel said at a council meeting on Monday (July 20): "The document represents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape this important corner of Trafford."

She added: "The scale of that opportunity now has a catalyst in the proposed new Manchester United stadium and the establishment of the Old Trafford Regeneration Mayoral Development Corporation. Together these developments give us the opportunity to create a thriving new neighbourhood that will contribute to Trafford's economy, culture, quality of life for decades to come."

What do residents think?

Some residents close to Old Trafford have raised concerns about whether the infrastructure will keep up with 15,000 new homes. One woman told the MEN: "As soon as you have 15,000 homes that might include families, that's when you need a whole new level of infrastructure. You need parks and you need GP surgeries and you need schools and nurseries and things."

She added: "What needs to happen is that the development needs to reflect the reality of how we live our lives and not how planners hope we live our lives."

What did councillors say?

Green councillor for Gorse Hill and Cornbrook Aaron Fradley asked the executive what assurances there would be that residents' needs would not be "superseded" by the "interests of developers."

Patel responded that the needs of residents and businesses are "baked into the whole proposal." She added: "Trafford council has commissioned this piece of work exactly to get on the front foot in those discussions to offer that reassurance to residents, to offer that commitment to residents."

Consultation responses will be used to shape the final version of the Wharfside masterplan.
