Man Utd revive interest in Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae as Martinez injury adds to defensive concerns

Manchester United have revived their interest in Bayern Munich centre-back Kim Min-jae after Lisandro Martinez picked up another injury during Argentina's World Cup final defeat to Spain.

German transfer expert Christian Falk confirmed United have long-term interest in the South Korean international and have put him on their transfer shortlist again this summer.

Falk said: "There is some truth to reports around Manchester United's interest in Min-jae Kim. He's on the list at United. They're always looking at his situation at Bayern Munich."

However, the 29-year-old is not looking to leave. Falk added: "Kim is very clear at the moment that he wants to stay at Bayern and he's fine with his current role at the club. He's not in the starting XI at the moment, but he has a chance to get there if he's playing well and, of course, if injuries strike."

Falk explained that Bayern see Kim as essential for their Champions League ambitions under Vincent Kompany: "Having a player like Kim available is critical if they want to go far in all competitions. The target is winning the competition. I can't remember this aim ever being so clearly formalised by the head coach."

United reportedly agreed personal terms with Kim in 2023, but the defender chose a €50 million move from Napoli to Bayern instead. Chelsea were also linked earlier this summer before signing Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace for £52 million.

Why do United need a centre-back?

Martinez's latest injury means Harry Maguire and Leny Yoro are expected to start the Premier League opener against Hull City next weekend. Maguire turns 34 during the upcoming season, and Yoro has had his own fitness issues.

United have had a relatively subdued window so far, with Tielemans, Santos and Darlow the only first-team arrivals. The club still want a left-back and another forward alongside any defensive addition.
