Tottenham and West Ham have held talks over Mateus Fernandes, with the Hammers demanding that a significant portion of their £85 million asking price is paid upfront, despite Spurs reportedly offering a higher overall package.

The development is a concern for Manchester United, who had been considered the frontrunners for the 21-year-old midfielder. Spurs are also monitoring United outcast Marcus Rashford and Liverpool's Cody Gakpo as part of a busy summer.

Is United's pursuit of Fernandes in trouble?

United still appear to be leading the race for Fernandes, but Spurs have emerged as serious competitors. The increase in West Ham's asking price from £80 million to £85 million, combined with the demand for upfront cash, suggests the Hammers are toughening their negotiating stance.

What is happening with Julian Alvarez?

Atletico Madrid chief executive Miguel Angel Gil Marin has confirmed the club will file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for allegedly negotiating with Alvarez while he is still under contract.

"Our responsibility is to defend the interests of Atletico, and that is why we are going to file a complaint with FIFA against Barcelona for negotiating with a player under an active contract during the protected period," he said.

Arsenal are also engaged in talks with Atletico over Alvarez and have prepared a proposal. Atletico would reportedly prefer to sell to Arsenal or PSG rather than Barcelona, and would be willing to accept one or two Arsenal players as part of the deal.

What about Rashford?

Spurs have placed Rashford on their summer shortlist after Barcelona did not exercise their option to buy. United manager Michael Carrick has been in regular contact with the forward, but his future remains unresolved.
