Mikel Arteta has allayed fears over Jurrien Timber after leaving the defender out of Arsenal's 4-2 Carabao Cup win at Ipswich on Tuesday night.

Timber made his first appearance of the season in the 2-0 win at Sunderland at the weekend, coming on at half-time after five months out with a groin problem that forced him to miss the Netherlands' World Cup campaign.

But he was not in the squad at Portman Road, prompting concern about a setback. Arteta said: "No, everything is fine. He has played much more than we wanted. The other day he had 53 minutes after five months out. We need to look after him."

Martin Zubimendi was used as a makeshift right-back in the absence of both Timber and Ben White. Myles Lewis-Skelly, the teenager United turned down at £45 million earlier this summer, started at left-back.

How did the match go?

Max Dowman broke the deadlock with a piece of solo brilliance before Noni Madueke made it two inside 16 minutes. Dowman completed a terrific brace early in the second half and Mikel Merino added a fourth before Anis Mehmeti and Chuba Akpom pulled goals back for Ipswich.

Arteta also rested Piero Hincapie, citing fatigue, and said of youngsters Dowman and Marli Salmon: "The way they train, the way they have been competing with us in pre-season... I'm really looking forward to watching them."
