Cameras could be installed to fine school-run drivers breaking traffic restrictions outside seven Manchester schools.
Manchester City Council is planning to put automatic number plate recognition cameras outside designated "school streets," roads with restrictions for cars during drop-offs and pick-ups.
The seven schools included in the plans are Brookburn Primary School, Manchester Communication Primary Academy, Manley Park Primary School, St Augustine's C of E Primary School, St James' C of E Primary School, St Paul's C of E Primary School and Our Lady's RC Primary School.
How would it work?
Cameras would automatically check vehicles entering the street and issue fines to drivers caught breaking the rules. The council said it believes the scheme would "stop inconsiderate parking" and encourage public transport use. It would also mean less pressure on school staff and volunteers who currently help manage traffic.
Who would be exempt?
Vehicles allowed to use school streets would include local residents and businesses, Blue Badge holders who need access, school vehicles, public buses and emergency services. Temporary exemptions would cover situations such as carers or waste collection.
The council has launched a consultation on the plan, which closes on September 6.
