Planning a late-night drive or an early commute this week? You will want to check your route first.
National Highways has confirmed a packed schedule of overnight closures across Greater Manchester's motorway network, running from Monday 5 October through to Thursday 8 October. Most restrictions kick in between 8pm and 10pm and lift by 6am, but several involve significant stretches of carriageway rather than just the odd slip road.
Here is what to watch out for.
What is happening on the M60?
The ring road takes hits on multiple nights. On Monday, the anti-clockwise carriageway between Junctions 22 and 21 closes from 10pm, along with the Junction 21 exit slip. The Junction 11 entry slip is also shut from 9pm.
Tuesday brings closures in both directions at Junction 3 (exit slips, 9pm to 6am) and a clockwise closure between Junctions 21 and 23, including the Junction 22 entry and Junction 23 exit slips. The Junction 17 exit slip is also shut.
By Wednesday, the clockwise Junctions 21 to 23 closure returns from midnight, while the anti-clockwise Junction 17 exit and entry slips both close from 9pm. Thursday sees the anti-clockwise carriageway shut between Junctions 23 and 21 from midnight, with the Junction 8 exit slip and Junction 17 entry slip also affected.
What about the M62?
The M62 is the most heavily affected route all week. The eastbound carriageway between Junctions 22 and 24 closes every night, with entry and exit slips at Junctions 22, 23 and 24 all shut. The westbound equivalent, Junctions 24 to 22, mirrors those closures on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 8pm.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, the westbound carriageway between Junctions 11 and 10 also shuts from 10pm, taking the link roads to the M6 in both directions with it. Thursday adds a westbound closure between Junctions 21 and 20 from 9pm.
The Junction 27 westbound exit slip closes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights.
Which other motorways are affected?
The M56 sees eastbound closures around Junction 7 on multiple nights, plus a westbound link road closure to the M53 northbound every night this week from 8pm. The eastbound Junction 14 entry slip is shut Monday to Wednesday.
The M61 has Junction 4 entry and exit slips closed northbound every night, along with the southbound Junction 9 exit slip and the link to the M65 eastbound. On Tuesday and Wednesday, the northbound Junction 8 exit slip is also affected.
The M67 between Junctions 3 and 4 closes in both directions every night this week from 8pm, which will affect drivers heading to and from Tameside and the Peak District.
The M66 southbound between Junctions 2 and 3 closes on Monday night, the southbound Junction 1 entry slip shuts on Wednesday, and the northbound Junction 2 carriageway is restricted on Thursday.
The M602 Junction 2 exit slip (eastbound) closes Monday and Tuesday, with the westbound entry slip shut Tuesday to Thursday from midnight.
Are there longer-term closures to know about?
Yes. The A62 northbound and southbound through Gildersome and Northern roundabout has been closed 24/7 since August and will remain shut until 31 October. The M62 eastbound Junction 34 entry slip is also closed around the clock until April 2027.
The A56 northbound between Bent Gate and Rising Bridge closes overnight on Wednesday and Thursday from 9pm.
All closures are subject to change depending on weather and progress of works. Drivers can check the latest updates on the National Highways website or via their travel app before setting off.
